Sustainability - Corporate Social Responsibility

At UBE, we know that progress is acceptable only if it is sustainable. Progress that is environment-friendly and safe for people. Therefore, at UBE, we started with our own area to make it safe for human and natural environments that are fully interdependent and interrelated.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Processes for sustainable progress

At the companies in the UBE Corporation Europe group, we have decided to be market leaders in the areas of Quality, Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Protection, bringing prosperity to today’s society and to the future generations.

We have therefore established an Integrated Management System based on processes that help us progress towards an increasingly effective management system through continuous improvement in performance.

The principles of the system are set forth in our "Management Policy", according to which the company’s Management Board assumes the responsibility to establish and monitor targets and start up all the necessary actions to communicate, impel, control and guarantee the development of a responsible, honest and sustainable corporate conduct, that creates shareholder value and satisfies the demands of external and internal customers, complying with all legal and ethical requirements. Furthermore we will pursue the protection of the Environment, minimizing the impact of our activity and preserving the health and safety of our employees and contractors, promoting mutually beneficial relationships with our stakeholders, in the spirit of the Responsible Care program.

Our Integrated Management System has been certified in the areas of Quality Management, Environmental Management and Occupational Health and Safety Management, for the processes of design, development, production and sales of έ caprolactam, crystalline ammonium sulphate, granular ammonium sulphate, liquid fertilisers, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,5-pentanediol,  polycarbonate diols, polyamides and copolyamides, as well as for the loading and unloading of bulk liquids in the concession of the Port of Castellon.

Global Initiative for Transparency in the Chemical Sector

Safety implies knowledge. Therefore, it is very important for the general public and, of course, the staff in the area at our company to be aware of the risks and safe practices that need to be followed when handling chemicals.

Downstream users and, especially, end consumers have insufficient knowledge about the risks of the chemicals that reach the market. Therefore, at UBE Corporation Europe, we take part in the Global Product Strategy (GPS), a worldwide initiative developed by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) to achieve safe handling and management of chemicals throughout their life cycle. To improve transparency in the chemical industry and increase confidence in its products, the ICCA has set up the ICCA GPS Portal, from where it encourages the industry to share the safety reports of its chemicals and where citizens and any entity interested can access them directly.

You can find in the attached column the links to the Global Product Strategy Summaries of several of our products.

Ethics Management at UBE Corporation Europe

Trust building is the most important asset in our company and in order to keep it and make it grow, we must commit to an honest and responsible corporate conduct. The companies in the UBE Corporation Europe group have established a Code of Ethics and Conduct which we wish to become the firm foundation that will support our corporate ethics and social responsibility policy.

UBE Corporation Europe’s Code of Ethics and Conduct is based on the Ube Group Action Guidelines, a series of rules established by UBE Industries Ltd. which act as a guide for the ethical conduct of all its employees. In addition to this, it is also based on the spirit of the global chemical industry initiative “Responsible Care”, and the highest international standards on ethics and professional conduct, recognized and accepted all over the world.

The Code of Ethics and Conduct is mandatory for every person having some type of contractual relation with the companies of the UBE Corporation Europe group, including every employee and especially those who hold management positions.

The four core values on which our code is based (Responsibility, Integrity, Sustainability, and Equality) shape our way of understanding our corporate responsibility and social commitment. Internally, these values are the basic ground of our shared culture, the vectors that define our common project and our personality as a company. In an external level, the values are the key elements where the trust of our stakeholders will be supported, the pillars on which a good public reputation will be built.

There is an Ethics and Corporate Responsibility Committee based in the head office of the UBE Corporation Europe group at Castellon (Spain), with the responsibility of receiving and giving response to alerts and consultations regarding the Code of Ethics and Conduct.

The Chemical Industry's Commitment to Sustainable Development

In the UBE Group, we are fully bound to our natural and social environment and specially committed to safety and the environment in the area closest to our production units.

Responsible Care is a global program started in Canada in 1985 and it is applied today in more than 60 countries across the world by the most advanced chemical companies in issues related to the environment, technology and safety. In Spain, it is managed and coordinated by the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (Spanish acronym: FEIQUE).

In Europe, we have participated in the Responsible Care Program since 2003, a voluntary initiative by chemical companies whose aim is to ensure that, when carrying on their businesses, participants attain continuous and demonstrable improvements in safety and the protection of health and the environment in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

Like UBE, over 60% of the Spanish chemical sector has already joined the program and, since its implementation in our country in 1993, the companies that apply it have experienced significant advances that contribute continuously and effectively to improving safety and health protection in the industry, also minimizing their environmental impact.
